In February 2025, the Sudan Rights Watch Network conducted an investigation on torture crimes in the five states of Darfur Region , as well as in Adré refugee camp in Chad. The network carried out interviews with victims and eyewitnesses who were subjected to torture during arbitrary detention, imprisonment, or abduction amid the armed conflict that erupted on April 15, 2023.
This report provides direct and detailed testimonies, documenting the nature of the accusations, the motivations and causes behind the violations, patterns of torture, methods, and tools used, as well as the duration of detention and its profound impact on the victims—physically, psychologically, socially, and economically.
Through their testimonies, victims and survivors recount the harsh conditions of their detention, during which they endured brutal treatment, including severe beatings, finger mutilation, rape, kicking, simulated drowning, and suspension in painful positions. Additionally, detainees were subjected to prolonged deprivation of food, water, sleep, fresh air, and exposure to light. Other violations included verbal humiliation, racial discrimination, and sexual assaults.
The duration of detention varied from a few hours to several months, with no clear legal charges brought against the victims. Some were accused of affiliation with the army, joint forces, or intelligence services, while others were targeted based on their ethnic identity, highlighting the ethnic dimension of torture practices.
These violations left severe physical consequences, with many victims suffering from fractures, chronic wounds, and partial disabilities. Psychologically, they continue to experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), severe depression, persistent anxiety, and constant distress. These effects have led to deteriorating health and social relationships. Economically, many victims and their families have suffered significant hardship, as some have lost their jobs or livelihoods due to disabilities, injuries, or the social stigma associated with their experiences.
