Darfur Caught in the Jaws of Conflict: Ongoing Violations and Escalating Humanitarian Crisis. A report on the security situation and human rights violations in the Darfur region during December 2024.

The Darfur region, across its five states, witnessed grave and widespread systematic violations against civilians and civilian objects throughout December, particularly in North Darfur and its capital, El Fasher. The city has remained under siege by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for more than nine months, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and intensifying the suffering of the population.

The report documented the systematic targeting of residential neighborhoods, displacement camps, markets, and healthcare facilities, including the Saudi Hospital in El Fasher. These densely populated areas have been subjected to relentless shelling, occurring almost daily. The report also recorded airstrikes carried out by the Sudanese army on Nyala, further aggravating the destruction and humanitarian suffering.

Additionally, the report highlighted the ongoing escalation of security incidents across various states of the region, reflecting the direct consequences of the protracted armed conflict. This escalation has entrenched insecurity and deepened the humanitarian crisis to catastrophic levels, with living conditions deteriorating daily.

The report further noted that states under RSF control are marked by widespread insecurity and systematic violations, including extrajudicial killings, armed looting, threats, kidnappings, arbitrary detentions, and restrictions on freedoms. Alarmingly, hate speech has also been on the rise. Furthermore, the report documented recurring armed conflicts between herders and farmers, road blockades, and assassinations, underscoring the complex security and humanitarian challenges facing the region.
