Since the outbreak of the armed conflict between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Army on April 15, 2023, in the capital Khartoum, the conflict has spread to various states across Sudan, including the states of the Darfur region.
Darfur has a long history of conflict and insecurity dating back to 2003. Despite the changing conflict parties and the shifting positions within the conflict (where the Sudanese Army was initially allied with the RSF in fighting the armed movements in Darfur, and now some of these movements have become allies of the Sudanese Army in its fight against the RSF in the same regions), the only constant throughout all these different conflicts is the suffering of civilians in Darfur from repeated violations, war crimes, displacement crises, and the associated economic and social hardships.
This report aims to answer the question: What happened at the Hassahisa camp in Central Darfur between the outbreak of the war on April 15, 2023, and the fall of the 21st Infantry Division in Zalingei on October 31, 2023, by the RSF after it had been under the control of the Sudanese Army.
The report focuses on the events leading up to this, particularly the siege of the region, specifically in the week preceding the fall. It is important to note that the Hassahisa camp is located near the headquarters of the 21st Infantry Division in Zalingei, which was the exact area that was besieged by the RSF from September 26 to October 31.
