Darfur Region: Spiral of Violence and Ongoing Conflict as Violations against Civilians Escalate

The security situation in Sudan, particularly in the Darfur region, witnessed a continuous deterioration in October 2024 because of the ongoing conflict between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and their allied or loyal parties. However, the conflict has resulted in serious human rights violations including willful killings, arbitrary arrests, indiscriminate attacks on civilian objects, sexual violence, as well as looting and destruction of property. Some areas also witnessed forced recruitment and abduction of children.
In accordance with the provisions of international humanitarian law, the four Geneva Conventions and their two Additional Protocols, in addition to regional laws and treaties, as well as articles 187 to 192 of the Sudanese Criminal Code of 1991, the 2020 amendment, all these crimes, violations, and violent acts, which were monitored by the network’s observers in the field, and which occurred on civilians, fall under the category of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Most violations against civilians and civilian objects have reportedly occurred repeatedly, exacerbating the human suffering is above the critical security situation that continues to affect everyone.
